Base of mast, the top of the mast in the picture is the forward side of the mast. Mast attaches to the boat with a larg bolt that runs thru two stainless flanges that are permanently mounted on roof. Mast goes between them in the down position and bolt is attached. Mast is then put up with base of mast being the pivot point.
