Sea Puppy is still a mess inside from the work I have been doing to the electrical system so instead of racing her I went out on Webejamming with Jim Pike, Lou, Greg and Cary. It was an interesting day.. Webejammings engine is still not running so Jim got his son to bring a skiff out and tow us from the dock the 5 miles to the inlet 🙂 and back later in the day.. sort of. 🙂
The first race was going good till we got to the first mark.. Jim thought we were doing a windward leeward race instead of a triangle course… everyone else in the fleet must have been wondering what we were doing heading back for the finish line after the first mark 🙂 it took a couple minutes to sort that out and get back on course 🙂 over all I think we did 3rd in that race… but I haven’t seen any of the official times yet.
The second race was a comedy of errors at the start. We were all kicked back with just the main up waiting on the start sequeance and never heard the horns or noticed the flags… all of a sudden I noticed that the whole fleet seemed to be lined up and heading for the start line and saw a flag come down on the race committe boat. I looked back at Jim and said “Jim? I think the race is starting….”
Jim didn’t think so but within seconds the boats started harding up and turning accross the start line.
I just hollered “their starting the race!” and ran like an insane person for the bow to clip on the jib halyard and untie the keepers on the jib. The funniest part of the whole thing was that just by accident we were in the middle of the fleet and hit the startline about 15 seconds after the start for a not bad start.. we had the jib up and trimmed about 15 seconds after the start. From the time I saw the race was starting till jib up and trimmed was maybe 45 seconds… 🙂 not bad for a dead cold “oh shit the race is on!” start. We think we came in second on this race. 🙂
With a couple of new crew on the boat we lost a bit of time to correcting mistakes and showing them how to do differnet things. Even us older hands on Webejamming made a few errors that cost us a few seconds here and there since we havent really sailed on her much in the last year and a half or so. (since the engine died)
Jim seems detirmined to steal all my crew from me though 🙂 lol he has asked patty to crew on Webejamming and also Cary.. I’m going have to make sure I keep some people so I can race Sea Puppy.. It’s a hard thing though as Jim is a good sailor and easy to learn from and Webejamming is a boat that wins a lot.. It’s always more fun to sail and win 🙂
After the race we headed back in and the wind was very decent so we ended up just tying the skiff to Webejamming and towing it most of the way back to the marina and only used it to tow us into the marina and slip.
